Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. – Nelson Mandela

The Artistic Director of the NJCC is 3x Grammy Award winning saxophonist, bandleader, composer. educator, and author, Jeff Coffin. Jeff is the saxophonist for Dave Matthews Band, leads his own group, Jeff Coffin & the Mu’tet, and you also likely know him from his 14 year tenure with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones (1997-2010). As an educator, Coffin has presented over 300 clinics around the world as a Yamaha and D’Addario Performing Artist and teaches at Vanderbilt University.

I feel it’s long past due that Nashville showcases her incredible composing and improvising jazz musicians in a way that truly recognizes their talents – and at a level and venue appropriate for it’s artistic value and contribution. Our aim is to ‘follow the spirit, not the line’ of those who came before us. We will build on the strong foundation of great artists like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, Wayne Shorter, etc…The spirit of these players will continue to inspire us as we present new compositions, fresh ideas, and most importantly, a community-based educational outreach which will empower young music students to learn the art of musical composition, improvisation and self-expression. In my opinion, there is no greater gift we can give our younger generations than self-confidence, a safe environment in which to explore, and the eternal wonder of curiosity.  – Jeff Coffin
